"The fishing village of Etretat is sixteen miles North East of Le Havre. Its fame is due to its landscape, one of the most spectacular along the coasts of France.

For generations visitors have been there to see the famous archways vaulting over the sea, to walk on the cliff tops and to look out over the sea and to observe the comings and goings of the local fisherfolk.

For over 200 years artists and writers have produced paintings, prints, travel accounts and guide books. Monet painted over eighty works there in the middle 1880's. However, many artists have recorded the salient views of Etretat well before Monet. Among these are his mentors Eugene Boudin and J B Jongkind and other artists he knew personally including Courbet, Daubigny and Corot."
